Islamabad / Gilgit: At least eight more people died and 13 were injured on Sunday in separate incidents related to rain throughout the country, authorities said.
As Monzón’s rains continue throughout the country, the authorities issued a warning of urban floods for several cities on Sunday, while the glacial fusion in Gilgit-Baltistan threatens the residents of the downstream areas.
According to the National Emergency Operations Center of the National Disaster Management Authority (NEOC), a significant rain activity is anticipated in Kashmir, Northeast of Punjab, the Potohar, Islamabad region and the upper and central parts of KP between June 29 and July 3.
According to rescue 1122, two people died and a dozen injured in incidents related to rain in LaHore. Meanwhile, two people were killed when the roof of a mud house collapsed in Shariffura.
In Karachi, three people were electrocuted, while two sisters died after being dragged by the waters of floods in the Kargah Nala de Gilgit-Baltistan.
The NEOC warned that significant rainfall can cause urban floods in low areas of KP, the Potohar and Islamabad region.
Neoc has also warned against the possible sudden floods in the northern parts, including the Hazara and Malakand divisions, the lower parts of the valleys of Jhelum and Poonch in Ajk, and the Pir Panjal mountain range. In addition, heavy to very strong rain was forecast in southern Sindh, particularly affecting Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta and Karachi from June 29 to July 5.
Glacier fusion
In GB, glaciers that melt quickly represent a constant threat to residents living in downstream areas.
The local administration said that many homes in the Aldea de Tokorkot in the Nagar district have been transferred to safer places, since the melted glacier near the village has eroded the earth, damaged agricultural fields, trees and transmission lines, and puts more than 15 homes at risk.
