Quebec teen dies after falling at closed factory in Shawinigan


The Provincial Police of Quebec says that a 15 -year -old girl died after a fall on the site of a closed factory in Shawinigan, northeast of Montreal.

One of the girl’s relatives alerted emergency services around 8:30 pm on Friday after the victim fell into a silo in the old Belgo factory, a paper factory that has been closed since 2008.

Sergeant Frédéric Deshaies says that two young women had come to walk through the factory site and climbed to the top of a silo when the girl fell into the concrete and metal structure and was trapped inside.

The local firefighters in Shawinigan, about 165 kilometers from Montreal, called their counterparts in the nearby trois-rivières for a confined space rescue operation.

The young victim was located and released around 4:40 am on Saturday and taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead.

A coroner will investigate his death. The adolescent who accompanies her was not injured.
