The Punjab government has decided to maintain a central DNA database for the rapid identification of criminals and repeat offenders, forming a group of experts for this task, said a spokesman for the provincial department of origin in a statement on Sunday.
Pakistan established his first DNA test laboratory in Islamabad in 2006 with China’s assistance to investigate complicated terrorism and criminal cases.
The Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) will collect DNA samples from the entire province, including prisoners in prisons and criminals, especially the usual ones.
The database aims to improve the efficiency of the criminal justice system and the “timely” identification of crime suspects, said the spokesman.
In this sense, on the instructions of the Interior Secretary of Punjab, Noorul Amin, an expert work group has formed to suggest a model to configure the Central DNA database.
The group will be headed by the general director of the PFSA, Dr. Muhammad Amjad, while its other members include the director of the Center for Excellence in Molecular Biology, Prof Dr. Muaz-Ur-Rrehman, Head of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Medicine King Edward, Dr. Nighat Yasmin, Dig Athar Waheed and director of the PFSA (Administration) Mirza Waleed Baig.
The working group has received instructions to present its suggestions on the preparation and procedure of the central database to the Secretary of the Interior within seven days.
