PTI’s opposition leader at the Omar Ayub Khan National Assembly and the opposition leader in Senate Shibli Faraz, were withdrawn from their seats, according to notifications of the respective secretariats of the houses that came to light on Friday.
On Tuesday, the Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) had disqualified the opposition leaders of the Senate and the National Assembly, the head of the Sunita Ittehad Council, Hamid Raza, and other PTI legislators after their convictions in cases related to the disturbances of May 9.
According to the notification of the Secretariat of the National Assembly, dated August 7, “a consequence of the disqualification and de-factuality of the opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan to be a member of the National Assembly (NA-18 Haripur) under article 63 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan … The office of the opposition office in the National Assembly has been vacant with the effect of co-octus 525.
The Senate Secretariat issued a similar notification for FARAZ: “Consequence of the disqualification and de-notification of the opposition leader in the Senate of Senate Syed Shibli Faraz, of being a member of the Senate under article 63 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan … The Office of the Senate Openance in the Senate has been vacant with the effect of August 5.”
The Superior Court of Peshawar (PHC) arrested the ECP on Wednesday to take measures against the leaders of PTI Faraz and Ayub.
A NOTIFICATION FROM THE ECP HAD SAID FARAZ, AYUB, KHARAL, RACE, MNA RAI HASSAN NAWAZ KHAN, GUL, MPA MUHAMMAD Ans From Being elected [if] … has been, for condemning for any crime that involves moral turbitude, condemned to imprisonment for a period of no less than two years) of the Constitution and its seats were vacant.
On May 9, 2023, PTI supporters, protesting the arrest of the founder of the Imran Khan party, organized violent protests throughout the country, destroying military facilities and state buildings, while attacked the residence of the commander of Lahore’s body. After the riots, thousands of protesters, including party leaders, were arrested.
Last month, an anti -terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad sentenced more than 100 leaders and PTI workers, including several key opposition figures, to the terms of the prison of up to 10 years in relation to the disturbances of May 9.
The opposition leader of Na, Khan, the opposition leader of the Senate, Faraz, Mna Sartaj Gul, Raza, Sheikh Rashid Shafique (nephew of former Interior Minister, Sheikh Rashid), Kanwal Shauzab, Farah Agha, Rai Haider Kharal and Muhammad Ahmad Chatt were among those sentenced to 10 years of rigidity
Ayub had criticized the “false verdict” of the ATC in an X publication, saying that it would dispute it and the disqualification of the ECP in the Court.
He also published a video of himself in the Superior Court of Peshawar with other leaders and lawyers of PTI, saying that the court had given him a few days and that a bond would be granted when presenting his appeal.
The disqualification of the ECP followed other recent disqualifications of leaders and legislators of PTI.
On July 29, the ECP had disqualified MNA Abdul Latif from the Circumscription of Na-1 (upper and lower chitral), asking questions about the hurry with which a burst of similar decisions was taken in recent days.
On July 28, the commission had disqualified Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, Mna Mohammad Ahmed Chatta and Mpa Ahmad Khan.
On December 21 and 26 of last year, a military court had sentenced more than 50 PTI leaders and activists, including Imran Khan Hassa Niazi’s nephew, up to 10 years for his participation in the disturbances of May 9.
The ATC have been listening to related cases on May 9 to comply with a deadline established by the Supreme Court for the conclusion of the trials in August.
