The leader of PTI and former MNA Sartaj Gul presented an appeal in the Superior Court of Lahore on Saturday against the 10 -year prison sentence and the fine of RS1 million delivered to him last week.
On May 9, 2023, PTI supporters, protesting the arrest of the founder of the Imran Khan party, organized violent protests throughout the country, after which thousands of protesters were arrested. On July 31 of this year, an anti -terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad sentenced PTI leaders, including 10 years in prison for their participation in disturbances.
The Pakistan Electoral Commission had later disqualified the opposition leader in the Omar Ayub Khan National Assembly, leader of the opposition in Senate Shibli Faraz, Mna Sartaj Gul and other PTI legislators after their convictions.
After the disqualification of the ECP, the opposition leaders in the NA and the Ayub and Faraz Senate, respectively, were removed from their seats, according to notifications of the respective secretariats of the houses.
Gul presented an appeal against the sentence, as well as a fine that he received for RS1 million. She is the first PTI leader in Punjab to present an appeal against her conviction, since the Superior Court of Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had arrested the ECP to take measures against the leaders of PTI Ayub and Faraz after they transferred the court.
“I am innocent in the case,” Gul said, wrote in his plea.
The appeal was presented through Gul’s lawyers, lawyer Ali Zafar and Muhammad Hussain Chotia.
Gul had previously served as Minister of State for Climate Change in the Ministry of Imran Khan until 2022, when the latter was expelled from the government after a motion of non -confidence.
In June of last year, she was nominated as a parliamentary leader of the Sunita Ittehad (sic) Council in the National Assembly for the PTI.
The request, a copy of which is available with Dawn.comHe asked the Court to annul the sentence of ten years in prison, as well as the fine.
Among other reasons for the appeal, he cited a sufficient and impeccable lack of evidence, also stating that Gul was convicted “without valid reasoning.”
