ISLAMABAD: The PPP reiterated its commitment to support the farming community and vowed to continue its fight to end all injustices faced by farmers.
“The PPP remains committed to respecting, empowering and revitalizing the agricultural sector for a prosperous Pakistan,” said the party’s Central Information Secretary Shazia Marri. He quoted PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari as saying that no economy can be strong if its farmers are weak.
“President Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari believes that strengthening farmers means strengthening Pakistan itself,” Marri said in a statement issued Saturday.
Marri said Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision was clear: the true measure of progress lies in the prosperity of farmers. He recalled that during the PPP government, Pakistan had gone from a wheat shortage to becoming a wheat exporting country, thanks to farmer-friendly policies.
He said the PPP chairman always supported farmers and advocated for timely procurement and fair prices.
Highlighting the impact of climate change, the PPP leader said it posed a serious threat to all Pakistani farmers. He added that Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari emphasized the need to invest in sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture, envisioning a modern agricultural economy where smallholder farmers could progress through technology and access to fair markets.
He said the PPP believed that insurance, access to credit and transparent governance were essential to protect farmers from the adverse effects of climate change.
Marri appreciated the government’s decision to allow the purchase of wheat, calling it a long-standing demand of the PPP. He added that approving the wheat support price was also a PPA demand; However, he noted that setting the price at Rs 4,000 instead of Rs 3,500 per 40 kg would have been more beneficial for farmers. He further said that reducing income tax from 45 per cent to 15 per cent was an important relief measure for the farming community.
