Pope Leo XIV revealed that his papal name was partially inspired by the imminent challenges of a world increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.
In his first formal speech as the newly elected Vatican Pope on Saturday, Leo told the Faculty of Cardinals that he chose to name himself after Pope Leo XIII, who directed the Catholic Church of his choice in 1878 at his death in 1903. Although he said that there are several reasons for the name he chose, Leo XIV mainly pointed out the historical “rerum novarum” of Leo XIII, also known as “rights and duties of capital and work”, which were based on the bases for modern Catholic social teachings.

Like the industrial revolution, the acceleration of the generative AI in recent years has already transformed the world and has raised a great concern about how these new technologies will affect human work. AI, not yet regulated in much of the world, has resulted in erroneous information (even through the use of stolen human similarities), as well as conflicts on intellectual property and labor displacement.
Francis himself was the object of misinformation of AI in 2023 when an image generated by the AI that represents it with a modern staggering jacket became viral online, one of the first generalized incidents that shows the potential of the AI to deceive and misinform.
In a warning issued by Francis at the beginning of last year, the Pope addressed the potential of the AI to expel “partial or completely false narratives”, additional cement “Eco Chambers” and create “new castes based on access to information and thus give rise to new forms of exploitation and inequality.”
Leo, the first pontiff born in the United States, indicated in his Saturday speech that his goal is to continue promoting Francis’s work, known for his commitment to social justice.
