Robert Francis Prevost, chosen on Thursday as the first Pope in the United States, will soon have the opportunity to declare where he is in some of the most pressing themes of the Church.
But first, many wanted to know their inclinations on a different subject. Is Premost, a Chicago, a fan of puppies or white socks?
Premost’s brother, John, told NBC Chicago that, unlike speculation, his brother rooted the city’s South Side team.
“Who said the puppies on the radio were wrong,” said John Prevost. “They are sox.”
The question of its rooting interests was an immediate fascination as soon as Premost was announced on Thursday as the newest leader of the 1,400 million Catholics worldwide.
A few hours after his choice, the puppies, 41 years after announcer Harry Caray celebrated an unlikely victory when shouting: “The good man wants the puppies to win!” – claimed Prevost as one of yours on social networks.
His mother was a fan of the puppies, having been raised on the north side of Chicago, famous in the house of the Wrigley field of puppies, said John Prevost to WNG-TV. His father, he added, was a fan of the Cardinals of San Luis.
However, the man who would become a dad had a different belief system, his brother said.
“He was never a puppy fan,” John Prevost said to WGN.
The White Sox, who have had little in the field in recent seasons, hastened to play good news, saying that they had already sent a shirt and a hat to the Vatican.
“The family always knows better, and sounds like the life for life of Pope Leo XIV falls a little closer to 35º and Shields,” the team told NBC Chicago. “Some things are bigger than baseball, but in this case, we are happy to have a fan of the white socks represented in the Vatican.”
Although the new Pope spent decades of his adult life working in Peru, his roots of Chicago led to speculation and jokes on social networks about their sports inclinations.
Although Faith has dominated Prevost’s life, sports have also played a role. Prevost, a 1977 graduate from the University of Villanova, retweeted in 2016 a position that congratulated the University for its recent National Male Basketball Championship of the NCAA. And he asked in a 2023 interview how he liked to spend his free time, he said: “I consider myself an amateur tennis player.
“Since I left Peru, I had few occasions to practice, so I hope to return to the court,” he said. “It’s not that this new work has left me a lot of free time for that until now.”
