Australian police said Wednesday that they had frustrated an anti -Semitic attack planned after discovering a caravan that contains explosives, in an escalation of threats against the Jewish community that the authorities called terrorism.
The caravan was discovered on January 19 in Dural, a suburb of about 36 kilometers (22 miles) northwest of Sydney, said the attached police commissioner of New Wales del Sur, David Hudson, to a press conference.
“That caravan contained a number of explosives and some indication that these explosives could be used in some form of anti -Semitic attack,” he said at a press conference.
The threat had been completely contained and there was no more threat to the Jewish community, he added.
Hudson said arrests had been made, but did not reveal how many or what were the charges.
The Prime Minister of New South Wales, Chris Minns, said that more than 100 officers were investigating the incident, by virtue of a joint operation against terrorism that involves the State and Federal Police.
“This is the discovery of a possible event of massive victims. There is only one way of calling it, and that is terrorism, ”he said.
Australia has suffered a series of anti-Semitic incidents in recent months, with attacks against synagogues, buildings and cars from the beginning of the Israel-Gaza War at the end of 2023.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, whose Center-Labiente Labor Party faces re-election in the surveys that May must have, has been criticized for the opposition about the increase in antisemy incidents in the country.
The Government says that it has taken additional measures to protect the Jewish community, including more funds and a federal working group to investigate anti -Semitic incidents.
