Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that begins in basal cells, which produce new skin cells to replace those that die, according to the Mayo Clinic. This type of skin cancer occurs more frequently in parts of the skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the head and neck, and can take many shapes on the skin, including a slightly transparent or brown bump.
“It is believed that most basal cell carcinomas are caused by long -term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation of sunlight,” according to the Mayo Clinic. “Avoiding sun and using sunscreen can help protect against basal cell carcinoma.”
