District to watch: A close race in Carbonear-Trinity-Bay de Verde
With many rural communities still recovering from the wildfires, municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador say the fires should force the province to reconsider the issue of regionalization. The organization says the response to the fire lacked coordination and communication in unincorporated communities.
This is another nail-biter, with the cable moving back and forth.
Part of this district has been through turmoil in recent months, with a massive bushfire destroying around 200 homes in Conception Bay North. It has been a safe seat for the Liberals since 2014, but veteran MHA Steve Crocker will not run again.
I’ve spent time reporting on the north coast since the fires and people are angry. The provincial and federal governments have yet to announce details of disaster relief plans. To make matters worse, there has been an increase in burglaries and robberies following the fire, leaving people feeling unsafe.
But Conception Bay North is just one part of the district.
PC candidate Riley Balsom comes from the other side. Balsom has been a Heart’s Content councilor since 2021 and a key PC organizer since 2014. He faces the Liberals’ Danielle Doyle, a special education teacher and Carbonear councillor.
