Pakistan and Armenia established on Sunday of diplomatic relations formally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FO) announced in a statement.
Until today, Pakistan and Armenia had no formal diplomatic relations. The relationship was characterized by a regional geopolitical rivalry, with Pakistan supporting Azerbaijan against Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabak conflict, according to the press information department.
However, earlier this week, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ishaq Dar, said that Pakistan had agreed to consider establishing diplomatic relations with Armenia after a phone call with the counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan after a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
According to FO today, Islamabad and Ereván formally established diplomatic relations by exchanging a joint statement in Tianjin, apart from the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in progress.
“Marking a historic step forward, both leaders [Dar and Mirzoyan] affirmed his commitment to the principles and objectives of [the] Charter of the United Nations and discussed possible ways of cooperation, including economy, education, culture and tourism, ”said the FO statement.
“The two leaders reaffirmed their desire to work closely with each other in bilateral and multilateral forums, to achieve their shared objectives of peace, progress and prosperity for the peoples of their two countries.”
In a publication about X, Dar wrote that he was happy to sign the joint communication with his Armenian counterpart and echoed the comments of the FO on the affirmation of his commitment to the principles of the UN Charter.
The FM also attached photos of himself and Mirzoyan signing and exchanging the document, Fangked for its national flags.
Previously this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the peace efforts of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, after his role in the negotiation of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement.
“Pakistan welcomes the historic peace agreement signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia at the White House Summit under the auspices of US President Donald J Trump,” the prime minister wrote in a statement on X.
He congratulated both countries for “drawing a course for a peaceful future for their region,” stating: “Pakistan has always been with the fraternal nation of Azerbaijan and we are with them in this proud moment in their history.”
