An Ontario man faces charges in an alleged theft and escape of data from the Texas Republican Party in 2021.
The United States Department of Justice says that Oshawa’s 37 -year -old man was arrested last week and faces charges under the Canadian law.
He says that the defendant obtained unauthorized access to the computer system of a third -party accommodation company to “disfigure and download a backup copy of the Texas Republican Party server.”
The Department of Justice says that the man attributed the responsibility of the cyber attack on social networks and a search for its electronic devices showed that it was “in possession of the stolen data of the Texas Republican Party.”
Authorities say that stolen data contained personal information and supposedly distributed online and made available for download.
Man has been accused of illegally transferring, having or using a means of identification in relation to illegal activity.
American officials say that the FBI Austin Cyber Task Force is investigating the case, with the assistance of the Provincial Police of Ontario and the Regional Police Service of Durham.
