The Provincial Police of Ontario is asking people along parts of Highway 9 in the Caledon area that take refuge on Saturday morning while the officers respond to “an incident in the area that involves some potentially armed people.”
The shelter in its place covers highway 9 between Gore Road, Patterson Side Road, FinnerTy Street and Humber Station Road in Caledon, OPP said in a press release on Saturday. People are asked outside that area to avoid traveling there until again.
The police did not immediately provide more details about the incident in the area that caused the refuge application in the place.
Police have issued the following guidelines for people in the affected area:
- If you are outside, seek refuge immediately. Ensure your safety within a building or other safe location.
- If it is inside a building, stay there and block all doors and windows.
- If you meet the suspect, do not participate or approach. Mark 911 immediately to advise the police.
- If possible, close the curtains to avoid attracting attention to you or your family.
- If you drive, continue with your location. Do not make unnecessary stops. As soon as it reaches its location, enter and immediately block its doors.
- Do not commit to anyone suspicious.
- Follow all the instructions of the officers on the scene.
More information will be disclosed as it is available, police said. Police said they will provide updates on social networks as the situation develops.
“We recognize the important emotional impact that a shelter can cause in the place,” said the OPP in the statement.
“The OPP is taking all the necessary precautions to solve this situation. We ask all the public members to take measures to protect their security while the police work to detain people.”
