An aviator is dead and another is injured with a gunshot wound after a “shooting incident” that involves security forces at the base of the Kirtland Air Force in New Mexico on early Saturday.
The security forces assigned to the 377th Squadron of the Security Forces at the base of the Kirtland Air Force responded to “an incident” around 2 in the morning of Saturday, which led to the shooting, the base in a statement said.
The injured aviator was shot in the hand and transported to the Treatment Center of the University of New Mexico, the base said. Since then it has been released.
The other aviator was found dead on the scene, Kafb said.
“The cause of death and incident remain under investigation by local authorities,” the base in the statement said.
In an update on Facebook, the base said that “officials are investigating an incident that occurred early this morning near the base of the Kirtland Air Force”, although it was not clear immediately which officials lead the investigation or where exactly.
The base said there is no threat to the public or for the base personnel at this time, and that the Truman door and the Truman visitors center are closed until new notice.
The base did not reveal other details about the incident.
