The office of former President Barack Obama issued a rare reprimand of President Donald Trump on Tuesday after the president accused his predecessor of having committed “betrayal” and manipulating the 2016 and 2020 elections.
“Out of respect for the presidency’s office, our office normally does not worthy the constant nonsense and the erroneous information that flows from this White House with an answer,” said Obama’s spokesman Patrick Rodenbush. “But these statements are outrageous enough to deserve one. These strange accusations are ridiculous and a weak attempt of distraction.”
When the journalists asked Tuesday to Trump about the late sexual offender convicted Jeffrey Epstein, he turned to what Obama’s “crime” called.
“After what they did to me, and if it is correct or incorrect, it is time to persecute people. Obama has been directly trapped,” Trump told reporters. “What they did in 2016 and 2020 is very criminal. It is criminal at the highest level. So those are really the things you should be talking about.”
“Look, it’s guilty. It’s not a question,” Trump added. “This was betrayal. This was every word you can think of. They tried to steal the elections. They tried to obfuscate the elections.”
Trump referred to the statements made by the National Director of Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and the director of the CIA, John Ratcliffe, in social media publications and television appearances that had found that Obama administration officials manipulated intelligence and conspired to undermine the legitimacy of Trump’s electoral victory in 2016.
Gabbard published on social networks on Friday that he was making a criminal referral to the Department of Justice.
In an event with Republicans of Congress later on Tuesday, Trump praised Gabbard and again accused Obama of being part of an effort to manipulate the elections. “These are vicious and horrible people,” he said about the former president and others.
Rodenbush said the Trump administration is being misleading about the information he is using to boost his claims.
“Nothing in the document issued last week undermined the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential elections, but did not successfully manipulate any vote. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the intelligence committee of the bipartisan Senate, led by then Chairman Rubio,” Rodenbush said.
When asked to comment on Obama’s statement, the White House spokesman, Davis Ingle, said: “The White House appreciates the commitment of director Gabbard with transparency and the effort to end the government’s weapon against US citizens.”
Gabbard alleges that the documents show that Russia did not seek to interfere in the 2016 elections for Trump’s benefit, despite the numerous investigations that showed the opposite.
“On December 8, 2016, IC officials prepared an evaluation for the president’s daily summary, discovering that Russia” did not affect the results of the recent US elections “when performing cyber attacks against infrastructure. Another special lawyer, appointed by then Aytorgiera General Bill Barr and defended by Trump, investigated the claims that the investigations related to the Russia were politicized for more than three years. John Durham’s report was critical of the management of the investigation by the FBI, saying that he found that the high “FBI staff showed a serious lack of analytical rigor towards the information they received”, but nothing at the level of crime now alleged by Trump.
The Senate report, meanwhile, was unequivocal about Russia’s actions.
“The bipartisan report of the committee found that Russia’s goal in its unprecedented operation of Hack-And-Lok against the United States in 2016, among other reasons, was to help Trump’s campaign. The candidate Trump and his campaign responded to that threat by adopting, encouraging and exploiting the Russian effort,” the report said.
Democratic legislators said the administration is trying to rewrite the story to calm Trump.
“This is just another example of the ID trying to cook the books, rewrite the story and erode the confidence in the intelligence agencies that supposes that it must lead,” Senator Mark Warner said, D-VA., He said in a statement.
The president of the Democratic Caucus of the House of Representatives, Pete Aguilar de California, told NBC News on Monday that “everything is a distraction.”
