Former President Barack Obama supports California’s plan to counteract the redistribution efforts of districts of the Republicans in Texas.
In a fund collection event on Tuesday night for the National Democratic Redistitos Committee, Obama said the Democratic Party must “effectively respond” to Republican attempts at Gerrymander.
“I’ve had to wrestle with my preference, which wouled be that we don ~ have political gerrymandering, but what i also know is that If we don` Country, They Will Not Stop, Because they do not apasar to Believe in this idea of an inclusive, expansive democracy, ”Obama Said at the event, which included former attorney general Eric Holder and rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., The former president of the House of Representatives.
Republicans in the Texas Chamber approved a bill on Wednesday to re -draw the lines of Congress that would add five more republican seats in Congress after the middle of the period of the period next year.
Last week, the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, asked state legislators to approve a voting measure to re -draw the lines of Congress in response to the new redistribution plans of districts in states led by Republicans such as Texas.
After the vote on Wednesday night in Austin, Newsom said in X: “It’s in Texas.”
While it is not prohibited, it is rare that the states present maps between the decadenal census counts.
Obama cited Newsom’s plan on Tuesday, saying that he has a “tremendous respect” for the proposal, which would allow the redistribution of districts that favor the Democrats.
“Texas is taking the direction of a partisan White House that says effectively: Gerrymander for partisan purposes so that we can keep the house despite our unpopular policies,” Obama said.
“So I think that Governor Newsom’s approach is a responsible approach. He said this will be responsible. We will not try to maximize it completely. We will only do it if Texas and/or other Republican states we will begin to extract these maneuvers,” he said.
The National Committee for Redistribution of Democratic Districts echoed Obama’s support on social networks on Wednesday night, calling the Newsom Plan “a fair and responsible response to Trump’s unprecedented power capture.”
