Nunavut’s main forensic says his office is investigating three deaths at the pond entrance.
Dr. Michael Fote confirmed the deaths in an email to CBC. He said that because the investigations are open, it would be inappropriate “to share details at this time.”
Fote said that all forensic reports become public after they are completed “in order to use precise information to help prevent future deaths.”
In an email, Nunavut’s government spokesman, Casey Lessard, said the government is responding with a “coordinated approach and multiple agencies.”
“While we are not confirming specific details due to respect for those potentially involved, we can confirm that the support is already on the ground and is being mobilized more,” Lessard wrote.
Lessard said some supports include more health workers, virtual mental health support and logistics support for pond entry.
Lessard said this was being done to “ensure that young people and families are safe and served.”
In Pond Inlet, a community prayer session will take place on Friday night at 7 pm in the Nasivvik high school gym.
