Nikki Glaser said he is thinking twice before making political jokes, including those about President Donald Trump, for fear of death threats or being detained.
The comedian was at the gala for the 26th Mark Twain award for American humor at the Kennedy center in Washington, DC, on Sunday to celebrate the honoree Conan O’Brien.
But mood took a more serious turn when he opened the red carpet about his concerns with the use of political humor, according to Deadline.
“Like, you are only afraid that you get threats from Doxx and death or who knows where they carry this, such as, honestly, that is not even a joke,” Glaser told journalists.
“It’s like a real fear. So it is unfortunate that this is true, but I will not lie and say that I do not think about that sometimes … I can be in the gallows and say: ‘I was just joking. I am a comedian.’ I hope it is a defense.”
Trump announced in February that he would be appointed president of the Scenic Arts Center based in Washington DC, dismissing several members of the Trustee Board.
O’Brien told reporters that he has no control over what his colleagues would say during the night, according to Deadline.
“Well, I have no voice of what any of my friends is doing,” he said.
After Glaser’s comments on the carpet, some comedians took the opportunity to make fun of the new administration. Sarah Silverman included a jab in his speech aimed at O’Brien, saying: “Really strange the days when you were the only hole of Orange A ** in the United States,” according to Yahoo Entertainment.
Other comedians who attended include Bill Burr, Stephen Colbert, Sean Evans, Nikki Glaser, Will Ferrell, David Letterman, Kumail Nanjini, Tracy Morgan, John Mulaney, Adam Sandler, Andy Richter and Reggie Watts.
The program will premiere in Netflix on May 4, according to the Kennedy Center.
