Fifty -one people died and more than 100 wounds when a fire broke out in a nightclub on the early Sunday in the city of Kocani in northern Macedonia, said Interior Minister Pance Toskovski.
The fire was caused by “pyrotechnic devices” used during a concert, said Toskovski.
“The sparks caused fire … and the fire spread through the disco,” he said.
A video of the event, verified by Reuters, shows a band that plays on the stage flanked by two flares shooting white sparks in the air. The sparks lit the roof on the band, which seems to get away when the video short.
Firefighters turned off the carbonized entrance and smoking to the club, called ‘Pulse’, television images of a local station.
The public broadcaster of MRT of Macedonia del Norte reported that 27 people were hospitalized in the hospital of the city of Skopje with severe burns, and another 23 were being treated in the clinical center. Among the injured were lower, he said.
The fire exploded at 3:00 am in Kocani.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said in a Facebook post: “This is a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia! The loss of so many young lives is irreparable, the pain of families, loved ones and friends is immeasurable. ”
“I ask all competent institutions (health services, relevant authorities) to take urgent measures to help the injured and support families of families.”
