A new year means new resolutions, often related to improving health.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and detecting potential problems requires visits to the doctor, getting tests, and seeking preventive care.
Many aren’t sure if they should see a doctor once a year, but it will depend on a few factors, according to registered nurse Jake Mossop.
“The emphasis is not so much on frequency, but rather making sure you’re connected to a primary care provider who knows your individual health concerns,” Mossop said in an interview with CTV Your Morning on Thursday in Toronto.
If you are between 20 and 30 years old, there is no need to see the doctor every year due to lower health risks. But people 40 and older will need to see their doctor more often, Mossop said.
You may need to see a doctor at least once a year if you have a chronic health condition and take prescription medications regularly, he said.
People of certain ages may need preventive tests and exams, he added.
Younger people who may be more sexually active need screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), while older people may need to have their blood pressure and cholesterol checked, he said.
Even with the need for checkups, many Canadians do not have a family doctor due to shortages.
