The National Assembly approved changes to laws relating to the three branches of the armed forces shortly after the government introduced them.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif introduced Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill 2025, Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Bill 2025 and Pakistan Navy (Amendment) Bill 2025, which were passed by majority votes.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar introduced the Supreme Court Practices and Procedures (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was also passed by a majority vote.
Tarar said the four bills, which were passed in nine minutes without any debate, were aimed at harmonizing existing laws with the recently signed 27th Constitutional Amendment Act. “These are not new laws. They are amendments to current laws,” he said.
The justice minister said the change in the army law was aimed at making the chief of the Army Staff the chief of the Defense Forces (DFC) and eliminating the post of chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee, adding that the tenure of the FDC would be five years from the date of his appointment.
