The Chamber of Representatives of the Parliament approved on Tuesday the members of Bill 2025 of wages and assignments (amendment) of Parliament, already approved by the Senate, with a majority vote, increasing the salary of the members of Parliament.
Leaving aside the criticisms about a proposed increase in their salaries, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a great increase for parliamentarians last month.
Consequently, the president of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, notified the increase, after the approval of the Prime Minister.
Jamaat-I-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman strongly criticized the approval of a mass increase in the salaries of parliamentarians, qualifying it as “betrayal of the public amid economic difficulties.”
The Finance Committee of the National Assembly, headed by Na Ayaz Sadiq, approved the proposed increase in the monthly salary of each MNA and Senator to RS519,000. Previously, legislators received a monthly salary from RS180,000.
The bill, approved by the NA today, was presented by Romina Khurshid Alam. The Minister of Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, did not oppose the proposed legislation, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.
The bill, which seeks to amend the law of members of Parliament (wages and assignments), 1974 [The Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill, 2025] It has already been approved by the Senate.
In December, the Punjab Assembly also approved an amendment bill, making a considerable increase in the financial benefits and privileges of elected members, the speaker, vice president, ministers, parliamentary secretaries, special assistants and advisors.
