Multiple people died and were injured when a driver ran over a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday night, police said.
The driver was in custody after the accident in East 41st Ave. and Fraser Street shortly after 8 pm local time, said Vancouver Police Department in an X position.
The police did not immediately provide several victims or a possible reason.
The accident site is close to the published location of the Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party, a celebration of the Filipino culture.
Deana Lancaster, spokesman for the General Hospital of Vancouver, the best trauma center in the region, said she was receiving multiple patients from the incident, which she understood that it was the Lapu-Lapu Day party.
“I am surprised and deeply sad for the horrible incident at the Lapu Lapu Day event today,” said the mayor of Vancouver, Ken Sim ,, added that more information would occur as soon as available.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected and with the Filipina community of Vancouver during this incredibly difficult time,” Sim said.
British Columbia Prime Minister David Eby said his team was in contact with Vancouver officials and would provide any necessary support.
Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the new Democratic Party of Canada, said in X that he was “horrified.”
“While we wait to learn more, our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and the Filipina de Vancouver community, which joined today to celebrate resilience,” he said.
