The Central Committee Ruet-I-Hilal announced Thursday that Moon Muharram has been seen in the country, hence Muharram’s first will fall on June 27 (Friday).
Consequently, Ashura, Muharram 10, will be observed on July 6 (Sunday).
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is also a month of mourning, observed in particular by Shiite Muslims around the world, which commemorates the battle of Karbala in 680 AD, where, among many, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad (La Paz is with him), the Imam Husain, was martyred and other family members were Martyrados or subjected to humiliation.
A notification of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interreligious Harmony, a copy of which it is available with Dawn.com, He said: “In compliance with the decision of the Central Committee of Ruet-E-Hilal, at its meeting held today in Quetta, the Federal Government in the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Islamabad interreligious harmony, announces that the Moon of Muharram-Ul- Haram 1447 AH has been seen.”
“Therefore, the 1st Muharram-uharam 1447 AH will begin from Friday, June 27, 2025,” he added.
Government to address religious hatred online
Early in the day, the Interior Ministry announced that it planned to take strict measures against the elements that spread religious hatred in social networks as part of a security plan before Muharram month.
According to a statement from the Ministry today, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi presided over a meeting aimed at reviewing the security plan for the month.
“It was decided that measures will be taken against elements that incite religious hatred on social networks in the light of Muharram,” he said.
“In this sense, Pemra (Pakistan electronic media regulatory authority) has received instructions to monitor hate content in electronic and social networks.”
The meeting reviewed the security plan for Muharram in all provinces, including Azad Cashmiro, Gilgit-Baltist and Islamabad, in detail, planning to take the administrative measures necessary to guarantee a Pacific Muharram throughout the country.
Naqvi promised to cooperate on all possible fronts to guarantee peace, particularly in AJK, Gilgit-Baltist and Islamabad.
On the Internet issue and the mobile phone service that are suspended during processions, the meeting explained that the decision will be made in consultation with each province, taking into account the safety situation of each respective province.
“All the necessary steps and decisions will be taken with mutual consultation,” said the minister, warning that no one would be allowed to encourage hate or religious provocation.
Karachi Police establishes security rooms for security
A day before, the Karachi commissioner, Syed Hassan Naqvi, ordered all the attached commissioners who finish Muharram’s arrangements in consultation with religious leaders, ulema and holders of permits and procession organizers of Muharram.
According to a statement, the attached commissioners prepared their contingency plans and presented the details to the commissioner. They said they have established control rooms for guidance and facilitation.
The Karachi district administration decided to provide infallible security for processions during Muharram.
The commissioner ordered all relevant departments to prioritize alternative traffic arrangements, cleaning, civic facilities, road repairs, water supply and street lighting.
Commissioner Naqvi also asked K-Electric to avoid cargo increasing in Ashura processions.
A meeting, chaired by the additional commissioner Ghulam Mehdi Shah, attended senior police officers, rangers, traffic police, security agencies, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the Water Board, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and other departments.
