The growing waters of the floods and a torrent of mud swept a village in the state of the northern Himalayas of Uttarakhand, killing at least four people, while more than 50 were missing, the local authorities and television channels said on Tuesday.
Army teams and disaster response forces had reached the area, local authorities said, with workers who tried to rescue trapped people under rubble and mud.
The television news channels showed that the waters of the floods and the mud rose a mountain and collide with the town, sweeping houses and roads while people ran through their lives.
The sliding sliding was crossed through the village of Dharali, burying some houses, according to an update of video shared by the State Prime Minister’s office.
Four people were killed and many more had been rescued so far, said Uttarkashi district administrator Prashant Arya, to local media.
“A huge landslide hit Dharali’s village in the Kheer Gad area near Harsil, causing a sudden flow of rubble and water through settlement,” said the central command of the Indian army in an X position.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to those affected and said the teams were doing everything possible to provide assistance.
Uttarakhand is prone to flooding and landslides, which some experts blame climate change.
At least 200 people were killed in 2021, when sudden floods swept two hydroelectric projects in the state.
There are about 10,000 glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, and many go back due to the heating climate.
