A 26 -year -old woman and her five -month -old son were killed by a tree that fell on a beach on Vancouver Island, RCMP said.
The incident in the Cumberland Park camp in Comox Lake, which is about 225 kilometers northwest of Victoria, occurred shortly before 2 pm on Thursday. The park also has a public beach and a picnic area.
BC Emergency Health Services said three ambulances responded and that a patient was treated and taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The area where the incident occurred is currently agreed as the police investigate.
It is not suspected of crime, said the Valley RCMP of Comox in a press release.
“Out of respect for the family, and given the sensitive nature of this loss, no more details will be disseminated.”
The deputy director of Firefighters, Stephane Dionne of Cumberland Fire Rescue, said they received a trauma call for two people injured by a tree that fell on the beach.
When the teams arrived at the scene, people were doing RCP in the two patients. Firefighters took over until the ambulances arrived.
He said that the people who were there before the crews were doing “everything in their possession” to help and thanked them for their efforts.
He said there is no concern in the lake.
“It simply turned out to be one of those incidents that you can’t control,” Dionne said. “But normally those areas are really safe.”
Dionne said he doesn’t know about the condition of the tree that fell.
The investigation is being managed by Lang Valley RCMP and the BC Forensic Service.
The mayor of Cumberland, Vickey Brown, asked the public to remain away from the area while the police investigate.
“Send both to our emergency response teams and the family involved strength, love and compassion,” he told Facebook.
