A disappeared plane with 10 on board was starving in Alaska on Friday, one day after he went to Nome and never arrived, the Coast Guard said. There are no survivors.
The remains of the plane were found approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome, and three people were found dead inside, said the maritime military branch.
It is believed that seven others that were on the plane “are inside the plane, but are currently inaccessible due to the condition of the plane,” said the Coast Guard in an update on X. “Our most sincere condolences are with those affected by this tragic incident . “
The Bering Air Cessna caravan took off Thursday from Unalakleet, on the east coast of Norton Sound in western Alaska, and headed to Nome about 140 miles away, authorities said.
There were nine passengers and a pilot on board.
The flight took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 PM on Thursday, Bering Air operations director David Olson, told the NBC Ktuu affiliate in Anchorage.
The radar analysis showed that around 3:18 pm on Thursday “this plane experienced some type of event that made them experience a rapid loss in elevation and rapid loss in speed”, CMDR, Lieutenant of the Coast Guard. Benjamin McIntyre-Coble said at a news conference on early Friday.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy said early Friday that he and his wife, Rose, “are disconsolate by the disappearance of Bering Air’s flight over Norton Sound.”
“Our prayers are with passengers, the pilot and their loved ones during this difficult time,” Dunleavy said in a statement.
The Nome Volunteer Fire Department said that its search and rescue team was activating for the recovery effort, with the assistance of the Alaska National Guard.
Nome and Unlakleet are not treated by the state’s road system, leaving air and water or snow motorcycle and follows the main forms of transport between the two.
