May 9 riots: Military courts hand another 60 civilians 2-10 years of jail time – Pakistan

Military courts sentenced another 60 civilians to prison terms of between two and ten years for their involvement in violent attacks on military installations during nationwide unrest on May 9, 2023, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations. (ISPR) on Thursday. .

Today’s announcement comes less than a week after the ISPR announced that 25 civilians were sentenced to prison for the events of May 9. That day, PTI supporters, protesting the brief arrest of party founder Imran Khan, staged violent protests across the country, vandalizing military installations and state-owned buildings, and also attacking the residence of the Lahore Corps Commander. .

Following the riots, thousands of protesters, including party leaders, were arrested. The government subsequently identified 105 civilians and accused and provided a list of their names to the high court to be tried under the Army Act. In October 2023, however, a five-member panel of the SC declared the military trials of the civilians arrested on May 9 null and void.

However, earlier this month, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court conditionally allowed military courts to pronounce the verdicts of 85 civilians in custody in cases related to the May 9 riots.

The sentencing of civilians by military courts was not only condemned by the PTI, but the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union also expressed concern, saying the move contradicts international laws.

“Following the announcement of the punishments on May 9 in light of the Supreme Court’s decision, the General Field Martial Court has promulgated the punishments to the following 60 remaining culprits after examining all the evidence, ensuring the provision of all legal rights to those convicted, completing due process and the corresponding legal procedures,” the statement said.

The statement added that the trials of those accused of the May 9 riots in military custody have concluded according to relevant laws.

“All convicted persons retain the right to appeal and other legal remedies, as guaranteed by the Constitution and the law,” he said. “The nation, the government and the armed forces remain firm in their commitment to uphold justice and ensure that the inviolable mandate of the State is maintained.”
