Several vehicles were recovered from the remains in Gilgit-Baltist affected by floods, government spokesman said on Saturday, added that rescue teams have not been able to locate the people who disappeared in floods.
Floods extended by GB last week, causing landslides, leaving many stranded and damaging more than 500 houses, roads and other infrastructure. Until now, 10 people, mostly tourists, have lost their lives, with between 10 and 15 tourists that are still missing.
GB government spokesman Faizullah Faraq said today that a search operation is being carried out in Babusar Highway during which many vehicles that were swept by floods have been recovered.
“The vehicles were found, but we found no idea of missing people,” he said in a statement.
Faraq continued that the rehabilitation work has accelerated in the areas affected by floods.
He said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would visit GB in two or three days. “With luck, the visit of the prime minister will provide relief to the injured victims.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed yesterday his goal of visiting GB in solidarity with affected people. He reaffirmed the full support of the federal government for relief and recovery efforts in the areas affected by floods in a high -level meeting that focused on immediate relief efforts, future disasters preparation and federal assistance to the affected regions.
“Water and electricity have been restored in many areas of the region,” said the spokesman, adding that communication systems in Babusar Highway and other places have also been restored.
The devastating impacts of climate change have become more visible in GB, since unprecedented heat waves, erratic climate patterns and glacial fusion have triggered cloud bubbles and intense floods throughout the region.
Yesterday, a glacier broke out in the Baagrot Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan caused the death of a person when a father and son fell into a ravine and were buried under the rubble of the glacier.
More floods induced by Cloudburst arrived in the districts of Ghizer and Hunza on Thursday.
Last week, at least four tourists died, two others wounded and 15 disappeared after the floods caused by heavy rains swept the GB Babusar area in the Diamer District.
