Four provinces have expressed interest in sharing accommodation tasks for the Commonwealth 2030 games if the event is awarded to Canada.
Manitoba, Ontario, Terranova and Labrador and Prince Eduardo Island have told the Canadian government body for the Commonwealth Games that are interested in offering together for the Games. Other countries may also present offers.
The potential hosts within Canada had until March 31 to present their interest, along with the sports they want to organize, to Commonwealth Sport Canada.
The Federal Government and the Regional Head of Ontario for the Heads of Ontario also support the offer of the four provinces.
Brian Macpherson, CEO of Commonwealth Sport Canada, said his organization will now work with governments to explore the viability of a multiprovince offer.
“We hope that together, we can co-create a real offer that will be presented to our International Federation before August 31,” he said.
The recent Canadian offers failed
The Commonwealth Games are a multi -sport multivenente festival with 74 countries that Canada has not been the host since 1994, when the games were in Victoria.
Hamilton tried to organize an offer for the 2030 Games, which would mark 100 years since the city of Ontario maintained the first iteration of the Games in 1930, but the Ontario government did not support it.
Alberta’s government would not support Calgary’s offer for 2030 because the costs were too high, the provincial government said in 2023.
And Victoria tried to offer for the 2026 games, but that plan was shot down by the BC government.
Over the years, the price to organize the Commonwealth Games has shot around $ 1 billion, Macpherson said, which caused him to ask a city and a province to assume most of the poorly practical costs.
The International Federation has responded by allowing the hosts drastically reduce the amount of sports and athletes so that the event is more affordable.
Macpherson said he appeals to Canada, that he wants to share the reduced costs of a reduced event in multiple provinces. It is also prioritizing the use of existing sports places, instead of financing new capital projects.
“We are eager to have United Canada games,” he said.
Manitoba last organized a large -scale multisport event of a similar magnitude in 1999, when Winnipeg was the host of the AM PAN games.
The governments of Manitoba, Ontario, Terranova and Labrador and Prince Eduardo have not immediately responded to a request for comments.
