Man, woman gunned down in name of ‘honour’ in Swat: police – Pakistan

A man and a woman were killed on Sunday night in an incident related to the ‘Honour’ in the Madyan Bashigram area in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Swat district, police said Monday.

The murders of ‘honor’ refer to the murder of individuals, predominantly women and girls, by family members who believe that the victim has brought dishonor to the family.

In a first information report (FIR) presented by a close relative of the deceased woman, it was declared that she was killed by her husband.

“The suspect thought that his wife had an illegal relationship with the man, after which he killed both,” said the police.

According to the FIR, a copy of which is available with Dawn.comThe suspect first opened fire against the man, after which he went home and shot his wife, and then proceeded to hit her with an ax.

The FIR has been presented under sections 302 (punishment of the premeditated murder) and 324 (attempt to commit murder) of the Pakistan Criminal Code (PPC). A search operation is being carried out to stop the suspect, which is currently in execution, police said.

Swat spokesman Swat, Moin Ali, said the District Police officer (DPO) Swat, Muhammad Umar Khan, has realized the incident, ordering DSP Madyan Circle to investigate the matter from all possible angles.

On June 15, a couple was killed in an alleged murder of ‘honor’ in the area of Kaly Kaly Fatma of the District of Mardan. The same day, a 17 -year -old boy was shot dead in Martung Tehsil of KP on behalf of “Honor.”

On May 26, a man supposedly shot three people, including a child, for ‘honor’ in the upper district of KP.

The data of the Pakistan Human Rights Commission (HRCP) show that in 2024, the murders of ‘Honor’ continued to be a serious problem in all Pakistan, with particularly high figures in Sindh and Punjab.

From January to November, a total of 346 people were victims of “honoring” crimes in the country.

In 2023, the country saw a total of 490 murder incidents of ‘Honor’, while in 2022, up to 590 people lost their lives due to similar murders.
