Man dies at B.C. ostrich farm protest camp in non-suspicious death, police say

RCMP say a man has died at a British Columbia ostrich farm where protesters have opposed a culling proposal for months, although there is nothing to suggest the death is suspicious.

A police liaison team discovered the man unconscious on Monday and Nakusp RCMP were called to what was described as a “sudden death.”

RCMP say in a news release that the man was found on the ground at the Universal Ostrich Farms protest camp in Edgewood, BC.

They say officers immediately began resuscitation which continued until paramedics arrived, but despite “significant efforts” the man could not be revived.

Police say the man has been identified, but so far officers have been unable to locate or notify any next of kin. Nakusp RCMP is supporting an investigation by the BC Coroners Service.

There were tributes to the man on social media pages dedicated to the protest movement, and his supporters said he had been in the camp for months.

Canada’s Supreme Court will decide Thursday whether to hear a final appeal by farmers against a cull ordered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after an outbreak of bird flu was detected among a flock of hundreds of birds.
