Man dies after being sucked into Long Island MRI machine


A 61 -year -old man in New York died after being absorbed by a magnetic resonance machine this week, Nassau County Police said Friday.

The man carried a large metal chain and entered a room without authorization, since the magnetic resonance machine, which uses a strong magnetic field, was running in a medical office in Westbury on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The metal necklace did “be attracted to the machine that resulted in a medical episode,” police said about the incident that occurred around 4:30 pm

He was declared dead of his wounds at 2:36 PM on Thursday in a hospital, police said in Friday update.

The safety rules surrounding magnetic resonance machines require that people do not bring anything metal to the procedure room. In general, patients are required to change clothes before entering and selecting on any implant or metal in their bodies.

“The careful detection of the people and objects that enter the MR environment is essential to ensure that nothing enters the magnetic area that can become a projectile,” says the food and medicines administration on its website on the security practices surrounding magnetic resonance.

The MRI office where the incident occurred, Nassau Open MRI, is located in Westbury, a community of around 15,000 in Nassau County on Long Island.
