Man dead, woman seriously hurt in what P.E.I. RCMP call a ‘targeted’ shooting into a vehicle

A man is dead and a woman has serious injuries after what RCMP is calling a “directed” shooting to a vehicle near Wellington on the island of the western prince Eduardo.

Scott Ferris, the RCMP senior communications advisor for PEI, said the incident occurred around 8 pm on Friday, in the Urbainville area.

“We had shooting reports in the area,” he said on Saturday morning.

“In that scene, our officers discovered a vehicle that seems to have crashed into a ditch. He hit a phone post,” he said. “Island Ems was also on the scene at that time. There was an unidentified man in the vehicle, it seems to have been the driver, who was declared dead on the scene.”

A woman with the 50 -year -old summer who was also at the Toyota Corolla 2008 was taken to Prince County Hospital with serious injuries, he said.

Ferris said he had no information on whether the injuries were caused by the shooting or accident.

The shooting occurred on Route 125, the HackMatack road, which Ferris described as “a small service road.” Around 10:30 pm on Friday night, the RCMP sent a press release saying that Road and Wellington Road, Route 124, were closed to all the traffic, with deviations instead.

Both roads reopened shortly after 9 am on Saturday.

“The investigation is giving us very strong indications that the incident was attacked, the shots were attacked and isolated to that particular scene,” said Ferris, when asked why an alert message was not issued ready to the public. “It’s very clear at this time.”

The PEI RCMP major crimes unit is leading the investigation.

The police are asking anyone with information about the incident to communicate with the RCMP of the Prince District at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300.

People who want to remain anonymous to call Pei Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-Tips (8477) are asked.
