A man is dead after being shot by Peel Police at Toronto Pearson Terminal 1 on Thursday morning.
The shooting occurred shortly before 7 am after the police received a call from a public member about a dispute involving two or three people, said Peel Chief of Peel, Nishan Duraiappah. The group knew each other and was there “for the purposes of trips,” he said.
Three officers responded to the call. The police had been trying to mediate the dispute for about 10 minutes when the man abruptly took out a firearm and pointed it to an officer, he said.
Kristy Denette, the spokeswoman for the Province Special Investigation Unit (SIU), told journalists that the man did not shoot his gun to the police, adding that it is not clear if he pointed out the weapon to the officers.
Two of the officers fired the man, SIU said, correcting his previous release that said three officers opened fire. The 30 -year -old man was declared dead on the scene, he added.
The man was “in trouble” and had been in a SUV in the departures of terminal 1, but the shooting occurred outside the vehicle, said the SIU.
Denette said some family members were present at the time of shooting, and the SUV had a children’s reinforcement seat inside.
No police officer were injured and a post mortem exam for man is scheduled for Friday morning, said the SIU.
The shooting “is an isolated incident and there are no known threats for public safety,” Peel Police said in an X post, previously Twitter.
When asked about the shooting in an unrelated event on Thursday, Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford described it unacceptable.
“What does the world come to? You go to the airport and there are shootings,” he said.
In an update of the media on Thursday, the Ontario Special Research Unit said that the man was “in trouble” and produced a weapon, but did not shoot it before being shot dead by the police at Pearson airport.
Peel’s paramedics responded to the scene around 6:56 am, a spokesman confirmed.
Duraiappah called the shooting a “tragic incident” and said it was not an attack on the airport.
“There was nothing to compromise airport operations,” he said.
Police have images of the body’s body chamber and is fully cooperating with the investigation of the SIU, he said.
Duraiappah said there was a great police presence on the scene, along with SIU researchers.
SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in Ontario incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injuries, discharge of a firearm or accusations of sexual assault.
The witness saw a bleeding man, officer making RCP
Danilo Simic told CBC News that he had just left a friend at the airport and was planning his route at Hamilton when he heard 10 or more strong blows.
“I immediately thought, this cannot be the strong escape of a car. This is something different, something that I have not heard before,” he said.

Simic said he crouched down in his car, assuming that the noises were shots. Everyone around them “stopped,” he said.
Two police cruises soon went next to him, he said.
When Simic walked away, he saw a man lying on the floor bleeding from his torso and his head. An officer was giving the RCP man, he said.
The police were also taking a woman from the scene, Simic said.
Another witness, Jake Seymour, said he was outside at the lower level of the airport when the shooting occurred.
He said he heard multiple shots, then went to the last floor to see if he could offer first aid. The first to answer were already there, he said in a direct message to CBC Toronto.
Seymour said the outputs in the area were blocked. The scene that was recorded was not on the road where passengers immediately left the airport, but from the secondary road closer to the airport parking lot, he said.
Gray SUV on stage with several evidence markers
The images of the scene showed a strong police presence with several regional shell police vehicles parked outside the huge three -level terminal building that is the center of Air Canada’s operations and most of the main international flights.
CBC News Crews saw at least a dozen police cars on the way to the exit area of Terminal 1.
An image of the scene showed a gray jeep Cherokee in a section of the road that has been cornered with police tape. There were several white evidence markers on the ground behind the vehicle, which had its open trunk.
The SIU confirmed that this was the vehicle involved in the shooting.
Several passengers were seen who carried their bags among police cruises with the lights flashing while they were heading to terminal 1.
