London hopes to organize the World Athletics Championship 2029, the mayor of London and Athletic Ventures announced Sunday before race 45 of the London Marathon.
A formal expression of interest will be presented to World Athletics in September, with the contingent offer to obtain 45 million pounds ($ 59.91 million) in government support.
A viability study projects a record economic and social impact of more than 400 million pounds, the athletics of the United Kingdom, Mayor Sadiq Khan and Athletic Ventures said in a statement on Sunday.
Athletic Ventures is a joint business between the athletics of the United Kingdom (UKA), Great Run Company and London Marathon Events.
London followed the 2012 Olympic Games organizing a successful world championship in 2017, with exhausted multitudes for all night sessions at the Olympic Stadium.
“London 2017 showed the world what this city and this country can do,” said UKA president Denise Lewis, who was part of the team that secured the 2017 offer.
“It was an incredible example of how we can unite behind a complete stage of vision, global energy and a lasting impact. I know we can do it again in 2029”.
The London Marathon on Sunday provided the trampoline for the announcement, with 56,000 runners that are expected to participate.
The offer for 2029 is part of a broader vision to redefine the delivery of the main international events in the United Kingdom, said Lewis, the Heptatlon’s Olympic medalist in 2000 in Sydney.
Birmingham in England has been selected to organize the European Athletics Championship 2026.
