Tribal leaders in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Khyber District reached an eight -month peace agreement ahead of Eidul Fitr.
The violence derived from the decades of decades has gained at least 130 lives in the fragile district, with multiple efforts to establish peace between the tribes. A high fire agreement was reached after months of conflict in January.
However, the KP government had announced a new operation against militants in Kurram last month after security officials were martyred in multiple attacks. There were also several attacks against the convoys of help and supply in the days after high fire.
According to a press release issued by the Jirga who signed the agreement, the tribal elders met today in Qila Abbas Saddar to restore regional peace. Important decisions were made in this Jirga that “would promote harmony and cooperation between the people in the area.”
“In this Jirga, the Shiite leaders of Alizai and the Sunni leaders of Bagan agreed a peace treaty to restore peace and establish tolerance in the area through mutual consultations,” said the press release.
“The representatives of both sects agreed to establish a peace treaty for an eight -month period to avoid any type of conflict in the area and try to improve the situation.”
Under Saturday’s agreement, tribal elders decided that if “unpleasant incidents” were reported on Kurram’s roads, then legal measures would be taken in accordance with Kohat’s agreement.
“In this agreement, both parties have committed to the fact that in the case of any incident harmful to peace in the area, they will be consulted and will find a solution through legal means,” says the press release, and adds that after reaching a consensus, the governor of KP and military leadership will be consulted.
The press release added that Saturday’s agreement also aimed to establish “cooperation with state institutions” and ensure that they take measures to establish peace in the region. In addition, it was agreed that federal and provincial institutions would jointly announce the formal opening of the roads.
“As a result of this jirga, both sects recognized the importance of cooperation and the establishment of peace with each other, which will improve the lives of people in the region,” the statement added.
The Jirga called on Saturday “a new message of hope” for Kurram and that it would try to “create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility in the region.”
