KKH partially blocked by river flow in GB’s Hunza: spokesperson – Pakistan

The erosion of the river and the increase in water flow caused a blockade in part of the Karakoram highway (KKH) in the Hunza Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday, according to a government spokesman.

GB government spokesman Faizullah Faraq said the water flow in the GB rivers had increased, so a part of the KKH had been blocked due to erosion.

“GB’s prime minister ordered the restoration of the road,” he said.

He added that the relevant institutions were on their way to restore the KKH in morkhun.

Faraq also said that a search for tourists who disappeared after a boat overturned in Skardu on Tuesday was underway.

“Due to the increase in water flow in the lakes, there is a prohibition of operating ships and section 144 is in force,” he said.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure is a legal provision that allows district administrations to prohibit an assembly of four or more people in an area for a limited period.

“Measures are being taken against those who take tourists to Lakes by boat despite the ban,” Faraq added.

Pakistan has been dealing with severe floods caused by cloud bubbles, floods of Glacial Lago (Glof) and intense monsoon rains since June. GB has been among the regions most affected by the extreme climate.

On Monday, a tourist search operation that disappeared after the floods induced by rain in the Babusar de GB area concluded after 14 days, and the funeral prayers of the tourists were carried out in absence.

Last month, thousands of people, including foreign tourists, were stranded in multiple locations in GB due to locked roads, including KKH, due to landslides.
