King Carlos III and Queen Camilla met privately with Pope Francis on Wednesday at the Vatican, Buckingham Palace said only weeks after Francis spent more than five weeks at the hospital.
“His Majesties were delighted that the Pope was well enough to accommodate them, and have had the opportunity to share his best wishes in person,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
During the meeting, the Pope “expressed his good wishes to his majesty on the occasion of his anniversary and sent his Majesty a rapid recovery of his health,” said the Vatican in a statement.
The real couple recently marked the twentieth anniversary of their wedding.
The meeting occurs when the 88 -year -old pontiff is recovering after a long stay at the hospital with pneumonia, where he was sometimes in critical condition and required high flow oxygenia. He was discharged from the hospital at the end of last month.
Charles and Camilla are in Rome as part of a visit to the State. On Tuesday, they met with the Italian President and toured the city, the Associated Press reported.
On Wednesday, the monarch was scheduled to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and address a joint session of the Italian Parliament, marking the first time a British monarch has done so.
