Khawaja Asif dismisses rumours of him resigning as defence minister – Pakistan

The Minister of Defense, Khawaja Asif, refuted on Thursday the rumors that circulate on social networks that he had resigned from his position after a controversy.

Asif clarified the matter after an X user named Zubair Ali Khan, in a series of positions on the platform on Wednesday night, claimed that the Minister of Defense had delivered his resignation about a controversy, but he had retired it and was now unattainable.

Responding to the publication that level the accusations against him, Asif wrote: “With apologies, this gentleman has written his wishes on this tweet. It is not reality.”

He shared a screen capture of the publication, edited with a red stamp that marked it as “false.”

User X, a former journalist, claimed that the minister resigned due to “intensified controversy regarding the arrest of the attached income of the additional commissioner (ADCR) of Sialkot a few days ago for charges of alleged financial corruption.

“In the resignation sent to Dr. Tauqeer Shah, advisor to the office of the Prime Minister, Khawaja Asif declared that the ADCR should be released or its resignation should be accepted,” the post alleged.

Khan also suggested that an “influential person” was behind the arrest, who was a subordinate from the department of the Minister of Defense.

Later, he published an update, claiming more than ASIF and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had held a meeting in Murree, during which the Minister of Defense was persuaded to withdraw his resignation by Sharif’s advice.

“After the meeting, Khawaja Asif is out of reach for all; neither any minister nor any journalist can contact him. Khawaja Asif has turned off all his numbers and has moved to an unknown place!” He alleged.

The rumors extended after Asif said that a large part of Pakistan’s bureaucracy sought refuge and citizenship in Portugal with thousands of millions in hand.

“More than half of the bureaucracy of our beloved homeland has already acquired properties in Portugal and is preparing to obtain citizenship,” Asif said in a position on Tuesday.

“These are well -known bureaucrats. However, after devouring billions of rupees, they comfortably live a retired life.”

He added that politicians “eat leftovers and hit their chests, without plots or foreign citizenship because they have to fight the elections.”

“Mr. Virk is playing the greatest role in providing refuge to bureaucracy and other elites in Portugal,” he said.
