Karachi University student dies after being run over by campus bus

A Karachi University student died on Friday after being hit by a campus bus, police said.

The victim was identified as a second-year student of social work department by traffic police inspector Akmal Rai.

According to police reports, the student had got off at a point near the Mehmood-ul-Hassan Library and was trying to cross the road when another bus passed by her.

Meanwhile, a campus bus, with license plate EB-0333, attempted to overtake the first bus and struck the student on the driver’s side.

The student, knocked over by the initial impact, was hit by the bus, dying instantly. The accident angered students and sparked protests on campus.

A notification issued by the university dated October 10, and available with sunrise.comHe stated that a commission of inquiry has been formed to “investigate the tragic incident.”

“The Vice-Chancellor is pleased to immediately constitute an inquiry committee to investigate the tragic incident in which a female student succumbed to death,” the notification said.

According to the notification, the coordinator of the committee is the chairperson of the Department of Criminology, Prof. Dr. Naima Saeed, and its members include the transport officer of NED University of Engineering and Technology, a final year student of the department of social work, M Alam, and another student of the department of social work, Ms. Sarwat.

“The committee is directed to investigate the incident and submit its report within 15 days,” the notification added.
