Karachi parts received light rain on Monday intermittently in the middle of a forecast for strong showers in the city of the Pakistan Meteorology (PMD).
The city is preparing for heavy rains in the next few days, since the strong currents of the Monzón penetrate Sindh as the PMD had said a day ago that a deep depression was expected to enter the parts of the southeast of the province of India today.
While issuing a severe weather warning, the PMD had highlighted the probability of torrential rains, racing winds and possible urban floods in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.
According to Rainfall Figures From The PMD As of 5pm Today, University Road Received The Most Rain With 8.8 Millimetres, Followed By Gulan-I-Maymar (8mm), Gulshan-I-Hahad (7mm), Airport Old Area (6.6mm), Saadi Town (4.3mm), Korangi, Korangi (4mm), PAF Faisal Base 3mm), Jinnah Terminal (2.8mm), Nazimabad (1.5 mm), North Karachi (1.2 mm) and Keamari (1 mm).
In an X message at 4:12 pm, the mayor of Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, said he had started raining again and urged people to avoid unnecessary movement.
He also held a meeting with senior Karachi officials with respect to rain preparations, saying that they agreed alternative routes and traffic deviations in case of any eventuality.
The Provincial Authority of Disaster Management went to remain in the field with drainage machines, pumps and other equipment necessary to guarantee the timely drainage of rainwater.
The general director of PDMA informed the members of the meeting that 16 drain bombs were already installed at various strangulation points throughout the city.
He also said that rescue kits would be provided to field officers to allow immediate assistance to citizens and rescue equipment 1122 were put on maximum alert to respond quickly in case of emergencies and carry out rescue operations with machinery to be implemented at key points, while the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation would establish special camps to provide guidance and support for citizens.
Wahab was told that the cleaning of storm drains and the strangulation points accelerated and addressed the presidents of the Board of the Union to guarantee the drainage of rainwater from the internal streets during the rain spell.
The members also decided that the control rooms would be established in the commissioner’s office and the Police Office to guarantee close coordination between all institutions.
K-electric officials assured the members of the meeting that the special control points were already established to guarantee an uninterrupted power supply during the rains.
Sindh’s secretary, Sindh Asif Hyder Shah, emphasized that all institutions must work in close coordination with a joint strategy to guarantee traffic management without problems, effective drainage and maximum facilitation for Karachi people during the next rains.
Last month, 15 people were killed since the rains had severely tried the fragile Karachi infrastructure, which caused the drains and sewers of rainwater to explode, and also interrupting industrial operations throughout the economic center. Several areas experienced extended interruptions of power and internet services, which continued until late, interrupting everyday life and increasing the misery of citizens.
Most of the deaths occurred due to collapseing structures, drowning and electrocution during the three days of rain, according to hospital officials.
