Karachi commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi ordered the attached commissioners to make special arrangements to stop professional begging during the next Eidul Fitr festival, said a statement from his office.
A total of 205 professional beggars were arrested through Karachi from March to October last year while the city administration continued its offensive against organized begging.
According to the statement, issued by Commissioner Sattar Javed, 220 professional beggars were arrested in the last 22 days and measures are being taken to prevent them from returning.
“The attached commissioners have received instructions to identify and apprehend possible beggars of beggars,” reads the statement.
The statement said the commissioner realized the growing number of professional beggars in the city and has ordered the attached commissioners who sneak them effectively in markets, intersections and shopping centers.
“They have been advised to seek help from social welfare organizations, NGOs, the Traffic Police and the Local Police,” reads the statement.
The commissioner’s office also published details of the actions taken against professional beggars, highlighting that 220 beggars have been arrested and delivered to the police since March 1.
In January, the Constitutional Bank of the Superior Court of Sindh (SHC) ordered the Karachi Traffic Police to take measures against beggars in the city’s traffic signals.
