The president of the Karachi Lawyers Association, Aamir Nawaz Warraich, was bloody on Tuesday after an attack of six people, whom he accused of attacking him about his position on the issue of channels, a position that promised that he would not go back.
Part of the green initiative of Pakistan, the Cholistan Canals project aims to water a total of 4.8 million acres (1.9 million hectares) of sterile land through the construction of six channels, two in Sindh, Baluchistan and Punjab. Five of these channels will be built on the Indo River, while the sixth will build along the Sutlej River, supplying approximately 4,120 cusecs of water to water Cholistan’s desert in Punjab.
Punjab Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz, and the head of the Army staff gene, also opened the ambitious Cholistan project to water the lands of South Punjab on February 15 in the middle of a public uproar and strong reserves in Sindh. What is being acclaimed as a change of play for Punjab has triggered a fuss in Sindh, which believes that the scheme will disturb the ecological balance in the province and deprive it of its mandatory water part. The Sindh Assembly unanimously approved a resolution against the construction of six new channels on the Indo River in March.
The KBA has also been one of the most important lawyer associations to oppose the project.
In a video message issued today, Warraich said: “A murderous attack was carried out against me for six people. I want to give the message that we will not abandon the problem of the six channels and that they will have to close them.”
He said a lawyer convention was scheduled for April 12 and would continue as planned. Warraich said he would not present a first information report for the incident.
The president of the KBA also threatened to close the border between Sindh and Punjab if the channel project decision was not revoked in 72 hours.
South Police General Inspector Syed Asad Raza said Syed Asad Raza Dawn.com that Warraich and other lawyers tended to meet in Cafe Bogey in II Chundarigar Road daily. He said they were sitting there when the incident took place.
The excavation said that no mortal weapon was used in the incident or any shot had occurred. He said it seemed to be a case of a fight that resulted in injuries. He said the police were collecting CCTV images and eye witness accounts to determine exact circumstances.
KBA general secretary Ghulam Rehman Korai said Warraich was taken to the Civil Hospital to receive treatment. The police surgeon, Dr. Sumaiya Syed, said he had received multiple wounds on the face, chest and feet.
The Interior Minister of Sindh, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, realized the incident and ordered the police to provide details of their initial action with respect to the incident.
“The elements involved in the attack must be taken to justice. Make the confidence of the legal community and continue with the investigation.
“Make the investigation effective and fruitful according to the evidence available in the crime scene,” the minister ordered.
The president of PTI Sindh, Halem Adil Sheikh, condemned the attack as a “cowardly act.”
“Aamir Nawaz Warraich has made great sacrifices for the restoration of the rule of law and the Constitution,” he said, added that the culprits must be arrested immediately.
“The continuous movement against the rule of law and the new channels cannot be arrested for cowardly acts,” Sheikh said in a statement.
