Justin Trudeau news: PMO staffers to meet Monday

With an announcement looming from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about his political future, CTV News has confirmed that staff from the Prime Minister’s Office will meet on Monday.

Two sources told CTV News they hope the prime minister and his chief of staff, Katie Telford, convey to the broader team that they don’t see a path forward for Trudeau’s continued leadership, absent support from the Liberal caucus.

Most of the Ontario, Atlantic, Quebec and BC caucuses determined over the Christmas break that they want Justin Trudeau to step aside, and a day-long national caucus is set for Wednesday to discuss that fact and the next steps.

At that meeting, which was to be his first with the entire Liberal caucus since he told them he would reflect on his next steps over the holidays, Trudeau was expected to face calls to resign as many MPs are increasingly concerned about the party’s popularity ahead of the 2025 federal elections with him as leader.

Sources told CTV News that if Trudeau announces his resignation, it will be from the top of the Liberal Party, and the goal would be to remain prime minister until a new leader is elected.

However, both sources cautioned that the ability to do so is by no means clear and, as a result, what happens next is subject to change.

Anticipating that Trudeau would have to publicly address the mounting pressure he faces early in the new year, Liberal supporters have already begun contemplating the party’s leadership rules, as well as the types of preparations needed for a potentially accelerated race.

Two sources told CTV News that Liberal MPs were invited to a special two-hour virtual briefing Monday afternoon on the party’s constitution and the caucus’s role in leadership issues.

Trudeau has been leader of the Liberal Party of Canada since 2013 and prime minister since 2015.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
