A three -members committee has been constituted by the president of the Supreme Court of India, Sanjiv Khanna Judge Yashwant VarmaA judge sitting from the Superior Court of Delhi. The Committee includes Judge Sheel Nagu, the president of the Superior Court of Punjab and Haryana, Judge GS Sandhawalia, the president of the Superior Court of Himachal Pradesh and Anu Sivaraman, judge of the Superior Court of Karnataka.
The accusations arose against Judge Varma after a fire in his official residence led to the alleged discovery of a significant amount of cash. The initial reports put the amount at ₹ 15 million rupees, although this figure has not been officially confirmed.
The internal investigation procedure of the Supreme Court dictates that when accusations arise against a judge of the Superior Court, the president of the Supreme Court of India, after a preliminary investigation, forms a committee of three judges to investigate the matter after seeking a response from the judge in question.
No judicial work
Significantly, the President of the Superior Court of Delhi for the moment has been asked not to assign any judicial work to Judge Yashwant Varma. The report presented by the Supreme Court of the Superior Court of Delhi, the response of Judge Yashwant Varma and other documents, are being loaded on the Supreme Court website.
After the alleged discovery of the unfluety cash, the Supreme Court College had convened a meeting and the president of the Superior Court of Delhi, DK Upadhyay, was asked to present a report on the accusations against Judge Varma. The report was presented on March 21.
In another decision, which the SC has clarified was not connected to the accusations, Judge Varma was transferred back to his parent court in Allahabad.
The Supreme Court has emphasized that the proposal for the transfer of Judge Varma was independent of any ongoing investigation into the accusations of cash.
In February 2018, the Central Office of Investigation had appointed Judge Varma as accused in the case of Factory Factories of Simbhaoli Sugar Factories that involves an improper appropriation of loan of ₹ 97.85 million rupees. Judge Varma was a non -executive director of the company at that time. Although the CBI launched an investigation, the case apparently lost impulse and a subsequent court order to resume the investigation was revoked by the Supreme Court in 2024, effectively ending the investigation.
