Jhelum police detain cleric Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza under MPO – Pakistan

Jhelum police said early on Tuesday that they have arrested the clergy engine Muhammad Ali Mirza for 30 days under the Public Order’s Ordinance (MPO).

Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance grants the authorities to arrest and arrest suspicious people to prevent “any person from acting in any way harmful to public safety” or to maintain public order.

Mirza was also among 17 clerics whose speeches were prohibited by Jhelum’s deputy commissioner during Muharram last year to avoid any possible sectarian violence.

The popular cleric survived an attempt to murder in a religious academy in March 2021. The suspect was arrested, and there was a case of murder attempt against him.

The cleric had also been reserved and arrested by the Jhelum police in May 2020 for derogatory comments against some religious figures. However, he was later released on bail.
