WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance has defended himself by saying he hopes his wife Usha, who was raised as a Hindu, converts to Christianity.
Vance, a devout Catholic who converted in 2019, said Friday that the backlash against his comments reeks of “anti-Christian bigotry.”
The 41-year-old was asked about raising her three children in an interfaith marriage at a Turning Point USA event honoring slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday.
“Do I hope that eventually she will be moved by the same thing that I was moved by the church? Yes, honestly, I hope so,” he said.
“But if you don’t, then God says everyone has free will, and that doesn’t cause me any problems.”
