Israel hit the capital of Yemen, Sanaa, on Sunday, killing at least two people, according to the country’s hutis rebels, who have repeatedly launched missiles and drones in Israel throughout the conflict of Gaza.
AFP The images showed a large fireball illuminating the heavens on the Yemeni capital of the rebels, leaving behind a column of coarse and black smoke.
The Houthis Ministry of Health reported “two martyrs and 35 wounded” in the Israeli raid.
A Houthi security source said AFP that the air attack attacked a municipal building in the center of Sanaa, while the group Al-Masirah TV Channel reported that the two dead were on a strike on an oil company installation in the city.
The channel said the objectives also included a power plant in southern Sanaa that was previously beaten last Sunday.
The Israeli army said it had been aimed at Huti military sites in Sanaa, including areas near the presidential palace, two electric power plants and a fuel storage installation.
“The strikes were carried out in response to repeated attacks of the Hutí terrorist regime against the state of Israel and its civilians,” the army said in a statement.
At the last minute of Friday, the Hutis fired a missile that the Israeli authorities said that “they had probably fragmented in the air.”
Since October 2023, the hutis have repeatedly fired missiles and drones to Israel, claiming to be acting in solidarity with the Palestinians. Most hutis attacks have been intercepted, but have caused a reprisal of Israeli air attacks in rebel objectives in Yemen.
On August 17, Israel said he went to an energy infrastructure site in Sanaa linked to the hutis, with Al-Masirah Informing at that time the Haziz Energy Station of the capital was hit. The last Israeli statement said the haziz installation was attacked again on Sunday.

Beyond the attacks against Israel himself, the hutis have also attacked ships that they say are linked to Tel Aviv in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Adén in Yemen.
The group expanded its campaign to attack ships linked to the United States and Great Britain after the two countries began military attacks aimed at ensuring the river route in January 2024.
In May, the rebels consolidated a high fire with the United States that ended weeks of intense US strikes, but promised to continue attacking Israeli ships.
Israeli defense minister Israel Katz said earlier this month that the Hutis “would pay with interest composed of each attempt to shoot Israel.”
